Abstract
ABSTRACT The Bin Trasher consists of a wall mounted rigid frame (1) which has a sliding sleeve (3) fitted, to which is pivotably attached by a pin (5) a cranked tee shaped handle (2) under which a compactor assembly (4) is pivotably attached by means of a similar pin (5). When a commercial wheelie bin is placed directly under the frame (1) the campactor assembly (4) is forced down onto the refuse in the bin by means of the tee shaped cranked handle (2) to compact it. The compactor assembly can be slid to the left or right along the rigid frame, to enable all of the refuse in the bin to be compacted.
Description
This invention relates to the manual compaction of domestic waste in a wheelie bin. This invention will enable a householder to compress up to 60% more domestic refuse in a conventional waste container or wheelie bin.
More specifically, this present invention relates to one embodiment of a portable domestic refuse compactor which clips onto the lid hinges of a Wheelie Bin and uses manually applied forces to impart the necessary power to a compactor lever arm, under which, a vertical compaction member is connected to a swivel ball joint suspended under the lever arm, at a distance which equates to the centre of the wheeliepbin.
The connection to the swivelling ball joint enables the vertical compaction member to be angled to all corners of the Refuse/wheelie Bin to enable greater compaction of the waste contents so as to maximise the Bins capacity.
Background Most householders and apartment dwellers are faced with the task of disposing of their refilse or garbage. In most cases they are charged for this disposal, both by volume and by frequency of collection by the disposal contractors or local authorities.
Compaction of the waste within a wheelie bin greatly reduces thefrequency of collection, as a large amount of the internal space is made available within the bin by simply compacting the contents.
V There are other apparatuses available which are either too complicated to operate, or that require an engine or an electrical or hydraulic power source to power them, whereas, what is required is an inexpensive, easy to use portable compactor that can be used by a householder to maximise the capacity of the refuse container or wheelie Bin, and this invention provides the means to such a solution.
Statement of invention The Portable Refuse Compactor consists of three basic components, comprising the main H shaped beam which has hooks welded to each end of the short tee section at one end, and has rubber hand grips fitted to the tee section at the top end, whilst the long centre section is fitted approximately halfway along on its lower face with a mounting clevis. A vertical compressor beam which is fitted at its top end with a swivel ball-joint assembly, and at its lower end with a compactor assembly, is bolted to the clevis under the main beam.
In practice once the assembly is hooked or engaged under the lid hinges bar of the wheelie bin, the compactor assembly can now be raised and lowered to effectively compact the refuse in the wheelie bin.
The device may be releasably hooked to the rear of the receptacle when not in use. This provides for simple stowing of the device when not in use. According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a receptacle for refuse, including a device as hereinbefore defined. The receptacle may include a body and a lid hinged to the body, and the device may be mounted. on the hinge for example releasably mounted on the hinge, to provide a relatively simple yet effective construction and operation.
Advantages over other embodiments: The main advantage of this invention is that the swivel ball-joint enables refuse to be compacted over the full area and in all comers of the bin. Preferably the compactor assembly could be bolted rather than be welded to the foot of the compressor beam, which could reduce the packing size.
Brief description of the drawings (For a better understanding of this invention it will now be described with respect to the preferred embodiment which shall be described herein with the assistance of drawings, wherein; Fig 1. is a perspective View of a refuse bin, with the portable bin compactor clipped on to it. As can be seen, the Portable Refuse Compactor consists of three basic components, comprising the main H shaped beam (2) which has hooks welded to each end of the short tee section (1) at one end, and has rubber hand grips (3) fitted to the tee section handle at the top end, whilst the long centre section (2) is fitted approximately halfway along on its lower face with a mounting clevis. (4) A Vertical compressor beam (5), which is fitted at its top end with a swivel ball-joint assembly (6), and at its lower end with a compactor assembly (7), is bolted to the clevis (4) under the main beam. In practice once the assembly is hooked or engaged under the lid I hinges bar of the wheelie bin, the compactor assembly can be raised and lowered to effectively compact the refuse in the Wheelie bin. _Detailed Description of the Inventfl Fig.1. Is a perspective View of the invention complete with itemised numbers. Referring to the figures, a manually operated clip-on refuse compactor is shown according to one embodiment of the invention, whereby the main beam assembly (2) is clipped under the wheelie bin lid hinge bar using hooks on the tee bar (1) which means that any downward pressure applied manually to the handles (3) of the tee shaped beam (2) forces the flexibly mounted press assembly (7) down onto the refuse, compressing the refuse between the press assembly (7) and the bottom of the wheelie bin, and effectively creating more space to enable more refuse to fit in the bin.
The flexible ball joint (6) at top of the compressor beam, ensures that the full area of the bin and in particular the corners are fully compacted.
Claims (1)
1. A portable, clip-on refuse compaction unit, for insertion onto a waste bin comprising a manually powered compactor assembly which can be angled by means of a ball-joint connection, to enable the compaction assembly to be forced down onto all areas of the bin interior so that any waste collected therein is compacted. . A waste compaction unit according to claim 1, wherein the said manually powered compactor assembly can be affixed to a variety of Waste or wheelie bins by simply adapting the mounting means. . A waste compaction unit according to claim 2 wherein the manually powered compactor assembly can be fitted with different size heads to accommodate a variety of sizes of refuse bins. . . A waste compaction unit according to claim 2 wherein the manually powered compactor assembly can be fitted with piercing means to enable the bursting of plastic bags and containers which swell up when compressed.
