Abstract
The invention relates to a ventilated filter cigarette, comprising a sleeved tobacco rod and a filter (7). Said filter consists of two filter sections (3, 4) and has ventilation elements. Ventilation elements are located in the area of the filter section (3) on the tobacco-rod side. In addition, the filter section (3) on the tobacco-rod side consists of a single filter segment, whereas the filter section (4) on the mouth side consists of a two-part filter segment, comprising a core (1) and a sleeve (2). The latter filter segment forms a coaxial filter part or coaxial filter.
Description
Technical Field
The invention relates to a ventilated filter-tipped cigarette.
Background
In EP 0875160 a1 a ventilated filter cigarette is described having a filter section comprising a coaxial filter core and a filter sleeve surrounding the coaxial filter core. In the region of such a coaxial filter section, ventilation holes are provided for introducing air into the sleeve. The material specification profile and the dimensions of the cigarette and the various parts of the filter are designed so that if the smoker covers the ventilation holes, the smoke is transported mainly through the filter sleeve in the manner of a changeover valve, whereas when the ventilation holes are uncovered, the smoke flows mainly through the filter core of the coaxial filter part. The aim of this study was therefore to be able to quantitatively control the amount of smoke produced as the behaviour of the consumer changes, for example to minimise the increase in condensation.
Physically, the smoke is an aerosol, i.e., a mixture of air and small droplets. These droplets may have a significantly varying size but are not visible to the human eye.
The taste evaluation of smoke by consumers, i.e. the flavour quality and intensity of the taste sensation, is influenced by the smoke flow rate and the droplet size and distribution thereof, which can be measured with a flow analyser or by selective collection and classification of particle weight and particle size.
Disclosure of Invention
It is an object of the present invention to provide a filter construction with which the droplet size distribution and smoke flow rate supplied to a smoker can be controlled.
This object is achieved by a filter-tipped cigarette having a cigarette portion and a filter comprising ventilation openings, which consists of two filter portions, characterized in that ventilation openings are arranged in the region of the filter portions on the cigarette portion side; -the cigarette segment side filter portion is a single body filter portion, the mouth side filter portion being a coaxial filter portion with a core and a sleeve; the pressure drop of the core is less than the pressure drop of the casing.
If the core surface in the mouth-side filter section is wrapped or rendered air-impermeable in an air-impermeable manner, a lateral flow of the mainstream smoke can be avoided.
So that the taste is significantly improved compared to the state of the art.
The result according to the invention results in a filter design that proceeds in several stages:
in the first phase, condensate and nicotine are fixed on a very short portion of the filter section facing the tobacco rod. In the second stage, the filter diameter used for the main stream of smoke is reduced, which increases the velocity of the smoke in this region by about three times. This filter construction provides a significant increase in flavor over conventional filters with reduced condensation. It has been shown that both the smoke composition and the average droplet size are affected by variations in flow rate, and that the perception of flavour and taste increases with significantly higher through-flow rates.
Since the cigarette according to the invention reduces the resistance and retention of the smoke, a very pleasant quality of the smoke for the smoker is also obtained.
Drawings
The invention is now explained in detail using schematic drawings:
the figure schematically shows a filter cigarette with a tobacco rod 6 and a filter 7, which are arranged in line one after the other in a conventional manner and are joined together by a wrapper 8. Typically the length of the cigarette section is 55-75 mm and the length of the filter is 21-27 mm. The wrapper 8 covers the join between the filter 7 and the tobacco rod 6 by 2-5 mm. As filter material for the filter 7 flat, fibrous or granular materials are conceivable, such as cellulose, cellulose esters, preferably cellulose acetate, melt-blown filter materials, such as those produced according to WO 97/33026, air-treated filter materials, such as those produced according to us patent 4,375,447, filter materials which can be incorporated with additives, tobacco, other readily degradable filter materials or thermoplastic filter fibers.
Detailed Description
The additives can be applied by spreading or spraying on the filter material, for example fibers, but can also be injected directly into the material section.
As additives for the filter material, there come into consideration: fragrances, acids or bases, or selectively-reactive adsorbents, e.g. activated carbon or SiO, in suspended or dissolved form2. The pH of the particle spectrum can be influenced by the addition of acids or bases.
Other additives having a selective retention effect are organic acids and salts thereof, metals and metal oxides, nitrogen components, ion exchanger systems (e.g. zeolites), alcohols, polyphenols and porphyrin derivatives.
The filter portion 3 on the cigarette portion side is first joined to the cigarette portion 6 in the form of a so-called single filter, and the filter portion 4 on the mouth side is joined to the end of the single filter facing away from the cigarette portion 6 in the form of a coaxial filter.
The single filter forming the filter portion on the cigarette segment side is made of one of the above-mentioned filter materials, preferably cellulose acetate, and has a single fineness of 2.50 denier and a total fineness of 35000 denier, and may be further blended with activated carbon.
In one embodiment, the cigarette segment side filter portion 3 has an outer diameter of 7.8 mm and a length of 13.0 mm. The pressure drop of the filter portion 3 on the cigarette segment side is, for example, 30 to 50 mm water, preferably 42 mm water.
Only in the area of the filter portion 3 on the cigarette portion side is a wrapper 8 provided with ventilation openings 5 as ventilation portions, which is arranged in 1-3 rows, preferably 2 rows, around the filter 7, but in the area of the filter portion 4 on the mouth side the wrapper 8 is completely impermeable to air. The air which has passed through the ventilation openings 5 is drawn into the filter 7, with the result that the condensate and nicotine of the mainstream smoke supplied from the cigarette portion 6 is reduced in the region of the cigarette-portion-side filter portion 3. Those skilled in the art know how to make vents, for example mechanically or electrostatically, or by laser drilling. Other equally well known breathable portions are cannulas or reduced materials.
The mouth-side filter portion 4 forming a coaxial filter has a core 1 and a sleeve 2 coaxially surrounding the core 1.
The pressure drop of the core may be between 10 and 50 mm water. The pressure drop of the sleeve is at least two times greater than the pressure drop of the core. The sleeve may also be smoke impermeable.
Example (b): embodiment of a 21 mm long filter
The core 1 has a diameter of 4.0 mm and a length of 8.0 mm. In one embodiment is made with cellulose acetate having a single denier of 6.0 and a total denier of 17000. The smoke resistance or pressure drop of the wick 1 is 20 mm water.
The sleeve 2 coaxially surrounding the core 1 has an inner diameter of 4 mm, an outer diameter of 7.8 mm and a length of 8.0 mm. As for the material, cellulose acetate having a single fineness of 2.0 denier and a total fineness of 55000 denier was used, and the pressure drop was 120 mm water.
Thus, overall, the coaxial filter is 8.0 mm long and 7.8 mm in diameter.
As a range of further embodiments, one may consider: for the core, the single denier is in the range of 3.0 to 8.0 denier, preferably 6.0 denier, and the total denier is in the range of 15000 and 50000 denier, preferably 17000 denier. For the sheath, the single denier is in the range of 1.5 to 3.0 denier, preferably 2.0 denier, and the total denier is in the range of 40000 and 75000 denier, preferably 55000 denier.
For the cigarette section side, the single fiber degree ranges from 1.5 to 5 denier, and the total fiber degree is 15000-.
