Abstract

Crystalline magnesium sulphate hydrate is directly obtained by the reaction of a MgO-containing mineral, usually magnesite, when the micronised ore containing the mineral reacts stoichiometrically with sulphuric acid and the respective quantity of water in a slurry consisting of the ore and a saturated magnesium sulphate solution. In this way, the magnesium sulphate hydrate product is formed directly in crystalline form, without being dissolved in the saturated solution that forms the slurry in which the micronised ore is suspended. The produced crystalline magnesium sulphate hydrate is separated on a screen, having a mesh larger than the initial micronization, through which the slurry with the undissolved solids passes. The saturated solution is separated from the undissolved solids of the slurry and recycled, while the solids are discharged after washing. The washing water is also recycled.
