A device for controlling the acceptance of coins in a liquid fuel or other vending machine having a plurality of slots for coins of different values comprises an electrical totaliser for adding up the values of all coins inserted, the arrangement being such that coins pass from the slots through separate channels 9 each of which is provided with a blocking device 7 movable to its operative position by an electromagnet 2 actuated by the totaliser when the latter passes a predetermined value. Each slot is arranged to be blocked in turn by the totaliser, starting with the slot for the highest values of coin so as to prevent a customer from paying a sum of money in excess of the price for the quantity of fuel required. Each blocking device comprises a hooked rod 7 mounted on a pin 6 which is rotated by a lever connection 4 to the armature 3 of the electromagnet 2; when in its blocking position, the hookedover end of the rod 7 projects through an aperture 8 so as to divert coins passing down the channel into a coin-return duct A2. Coins which are accepted pass down a duct A1. A coin-tester can also be incorporated in each channel 9 and arranged to actuate the blocking device to divert unacceptable coins down the duct A2. Provisions may be made for switching off the electric current supply to the electromagnets so as to bring all the blocking devices simultaneously into their operative positions.
