Abstract
999,666. Centrifugal and transverse-flow fans. I. LAING. Jan. 15, 1962 [April 1, 1961], No. 1485/62. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F4] In a rotor of the type comprising hollow blades arranged in a ring about an axis and extending longitudinally thereof, the rotor is made up of a plurality of rings each having a number of longitudinally directed, hollow projections, the projections of adjacent rings being aligned to form said blades. As shown in Fig. 1 the rotor is formed by rings 7 having projections 8 of aerofoil cross-section which are secured together to form hollow blades 9. The rotor is driven by a shaft 2 and a first fluid medium is supplied to alternate blades 9 from a tube 20, the fluid being returned through the remaining blades to a duct 24. Guide walls (Fig. 2, not shown) are mounted around the rotor and cause the latter to operate as a transverse-flow fan drawing a second fluid medium, e.g. air over the blades. In a modification, of which Fig. 7 is an exploded view, each ring is formed by a pair of channel shaped plates, 60, 61 or 62, 63 which are secured together at their edges 66, 67 to form an annular duct interconnecting the blades which are formed as before by aligned projections 64, 65, alignment being effected by rods 74. In a further embodiment, Fig. 17, the projections are of frustoconical form and rest inside one another, the projections having partitions 172 so that each blade is divided into two ducts 173, 174. The rotor in this embodiment operates as a centrifugal fan and has a valve member 186 slidable on an extension of shaft 184 to prevent air from flowing over any desired number of blade elements 171. The rings may be corrugated between the blades and in the modifications of Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) each blade element comprises a plurality of closely adjacent hollow projections.
