Abstract

999,611. Cooling gas turbines. GASTURBINENBAW UND ENERGINMASCHINENESTWICKLUNG PIRNA VEB. March 7, 1962, No. 8725/62. Headings FIG and FIT. In a gas turbine engine coolant is conducted axially past stems 15 of the turbine blades 2 and through an annular chamber formed between the turbine stages. Filler members 16 are provided in the spaces between the blade stems 15 and between radial webs 11 in the annular chamber. The members 16, which are urged radially outwardly under the influence of centrifugal force, are made from sheet metal and carry spacing bosses 17. Stabilizing chambers 19 are formed on either side axially of the webs 11, since there is a greater number of cooling gaps formed in the turbine discs than in the annular chamber. The coolant is tapped off a relatively low pressure stage of the compressor, passes through a convergent throttling inlet all of the turbine stages and into the exhaust gas duct through an annular gap (Fig. 1, not shown).
