Abstract

996,656. Marine lifesaving equipment. J. PALLMANN. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 2, 1963], No. 8181/64. Heading B7U. A lifesaving apparatus comprises an elastic balloon envelope 1 enclosing the head of a swimmer having a valve 6 to supply air to the swimmer through a breathing hose 5, excess air being ejected through a sealing collar 3 around the neck of the swimmer. As shown, fresh air enters the balloon via one-way valve 6, hoses 5 and enters chamber 7 in mask 4. Exhaled air is passed from the mask outlet valve 8 and fills the balloon 1 where it maintains buoyancy and can, when the valve 6 is blocked by water, act as a spare supply of air to be breathed through inlet valve 9. When the air pressure in the balloon reaches a given amount the air escapes round the collar 3. The balloon is made of transparent plastics material, e.g. soft polyvinylchloride foil and the field of vision of the swimmer is kept clear by a condensation repellant treatment.
