Abstract
<PICT:0995352/C1/1> <PICT:0995352/C1/2> The moisture content of a mix to be sintered is controlled at a predetermined value by means determining its bulk-density and comprising a detector 25, measuring the absorbtion of gamma rays omitted by source 23, Fig. 1, by the moistened mix and giving an indication of the moisture content of the mix by means of the graph of Fig. 4. Where the moistened mix is to be pelleted before sintering, the optimum moisture content is near the point of minimum bulk density and is sought and maintained by feeding the output signal from the detector to a computer 24 which stores this signal and causes the flow controller 39 to alter the water supply to spray 15 and so change the bulk density of the mix. The new output signal of the detector is compared with the previously stored signal and the resulting signal causes the computer to alter the water flow towards that giving the required minimum bulk-density. The computer may be omitted if only semi-automatic seeking of a moisture content other than that giving the minimum bulk-density is required. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), wherein any moisture content can be automatically sought and held, two gamma radiation sources and detectors are arranged to measure the bulk density of the mix before and after the addition of a small constant amount of water, so as to determine the rate of flow of the nearly dry mix and pass on a resulting signal to a ratio-controller which in turn controls a main water spray to deliver water to the mix in the necessary ratio to give the required moisture content.
