Abstract
Acrylonitrile is polymerized in dimethyl sulphoxide solution and, when the extent of polymerization is from 70-90%, unreacted monomer is evaporated from the solution while maintaining the solution in the form of a film or layer not more than 2 cm. thick, at a temperature of 20-60 DEG C. and a pressure of 30-500 mm. Hg. The monomer recovery is effected in an evaporator fitted with revolving discs and into which a gas, e.g. air, inert to the polymerizing solution, is continuously introduced. The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with up to 15% of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer of which methyl acrylate and sodium allyl sulphonate are exemplified. A number of other such suitable monomers are listed and include ethylenic hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, amides, chlorides, acetates and sulphonic acids. Catalysts such as azobisisobutyronitrile and lauroyl peroxide, colouration inhibitors such as tin compounds, acids and sulphuric dioxide gas, and chain transfer agents such as dodecyl mercaptan and sodium b -styrene sulphonate may be used.
