Abstract
Anti-bacterial compositions comprise in synergistic combination (1) at least one halogenated salicylanilide having the formula <FORM:0994705/C4-C5/1> wherein the groups X1, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or halogen, X2 is halogen, and the groups Y, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, halogen or trifluoromethyl, and (2) at least one trifluoromethyl diphenyl urea having the formula <FORM:0994705/C4-C5/2> wherein X3 is halogen or ethoxy, Z is hydrogen or trifluoromethyl, and X1 and Y have the meaning given above; the weight ratio of halogenated salicylanilide to trifluoromethyl diphenyl urea being from 1: 20 to 20: 1. Salicylanilides specified are 3,5,41 - tribromosalicylanilide, 5 - bromosalicyl - 3,5-di-(tri-fluoromethyl)anilide, 5 - chlorosalicyl - 3,5-di-(trifluoromethyl)anilide, 3,5 - dichlorosalicyl - 3,4 - dichloroanilide and 5 - chlorosalicyl - 3 - trifluoromethyl - 4 - chloroanilide; other suitable compounds are described in Specification 745,607. The preferred urea compounds are 3 - trifluoromethyl - 4,41-dichlorocarbanilide 3 - trifluoromethyl - 31,4,41-trichlorocarbanilide, 3,31 - bis - (trifluoromethyl) - 4 - ethoxy - 41 - chlorocarbanilide and 3,5 - bis - (trifluoromethyl) - 4 - chlorocarbanilide; some of these and other suitable urea compounds are described in Specification 774,802. The active ingredients may be used with soaps, e.g. sodium, potassium and magnesium soaps of tallow and coconut fatty acids, and with anionic or non-ionic synthetic detergents. Anionic detergents mentioned are sulphated and sulphonated compounds such as sodium or potassium alkyl sulphates; sodium or potassium alkyl benzene sulphonates; sodium alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates; sodium coconut oil fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates; sodium salts of sulphuric acid esters of reaction products of higher fatty alcohols and ethylene oxide. Non-ionic detergents mentioned are condensation products of alkylene oxides and organic hydrophobic compounds such as the "Pluronic" (Trade Mark) detergents formed by condensing ethylene oxide with the condensation product of propylene oxide and propylene glycol; polyethylene oxide condensates of alkyl phenols; condensate of ethylene oxide with the reaction product of propylene oxide and ethylenediamine. The use of sodium and potassium chlorides and sulphates, sodium tripolyphosphate and silicate solids is also mentioned. The anti-bacterial compositions may take the form of toilet detergent bars and granular laundry detergent compositions. Specifications 596,560, 614,044, 645,129 and 774,802 also are referred to.ALSO:Anti-bacterial compositions comprise in synergistic combination (1) at least one halogenated salicylanilide having the formula <FORM:0994705/A5-A6/1> wherein the groups X1, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or halogen, X2 is halogen, and the groups Y, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, halogen or trifluoromethyl, and (2) at least one trifluoromethyl diphenyl urea having the formula <FORM:0994705/A5-A6/2> wherein X3 is halogen or ethoxy, Z is hydrogen or trifluoromethyl, and X1 and Y have the meaning given above; the weight ratio of halogenated salicylanilide to trifluoromethyl diphenyl urea being from 1 : 20 to 20 : 1. Salicylanilides specified are 3,5,4 - tribromosalicylanilide, 5 - bromosalicyl - 3,5 di(trifluoromethyl)anilide, 5 - chlorosalicyl - 3,5 - di (trifluoromethyl)anilide, 3,5 - dichlorosalicyl-3,4 - dichloroanilide and 5 - chlorosalicyl - 3-trifluoromethyl - 4 - chloroanilide; other suitable compounds are described in Specification 745,607. The preferred urea compounds are 3-trifluoromethyl - 4,41 - dichlorocarbanilide, 3-trifluoromethyl - 31,4,41 - trichlorocarbanilide, 3,31 - bis(trifluoromethyl) - 41 - ethoxy - 41 - chlorocarbanilide and 3,5 - bis(trifluoromethyl) - 4 - chlorocarbanilide; some of these and other suitable urea compounds are described in Specification 774,802. The active ingredients may be used with soaps, e.g. sodium, potassium and magnesium soaps of tallow and coconut fatty acids, and with anionic or non-ionic synthetic detergents. The anti-bacterial compositions may take the form of toilet detergent bars, laundry detergent compositions, tooth powders, toothpastes, mouth washes, antiseptic ointments and foot powders. Specifications 596,560, 614,044, and 645,129 also are referred to.
