Abstract
In a propellent grain having embedded therein one or more elongated heat-conducting units (see Division F3), the propellent may be plastic and comprise (a) polyvinyl chloride, dibutyl sebacate, and ammonium nitrate or perchlorate; copper chromite may be added as a burning catalyst; (b) nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, diethyl phthalate, 2-nitrodiphenylamine, and candelilla wax; (c) finely-divided ammonium, sodium, or potassium perchlorate or nitrate, or barium peroxide, dispersed in a liquid fuel, e.g. triethyl benzene, dodecane, liquid polyisobutylene, dimethyl maleate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl oxalate, benzyl alcohol, triethylene glycol, and methyl-naphthyl ether; also present may be aluminium or magnesium powder and a gelling agent, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, or sodium or magnesium stearate or palmitate. A self-oxidant composition, used for coating the metal units to vary the burning rate, may comprise nitrocellulose gelatinized with nitroglycerine or with a plasticizer, many of which are specified; other coating compositions comprise an oxidant, and a binding agent, to which may be added organic fuels, finely-divided metals, carbon, or silicon. Suitable oxidants are ammonium, potassium, sodium and lithium chlorates and perchlorates, ammonium, potassium, sodium and barium nitrates, peroxides of lead, barium, potassium, and sodium, hexanitroethane, mannitol hexanitrate, and RDX, and suitable binding agents are organic polymers, natural and synthetic rubbers, natural resins, silicones and bituminous materials.
