[Also in Division B5] A method of shaping integral convex hollow bodies comprises preparing a rough blank having a surface the same as the object to be made but with larger axial and smaller lateral dimensions and having an opening at one axial end thereof, filling the blank with liquid and subjecting it to an axial pressurising action between a pair of half matrices shaped to correspond to the upper and lower portions of the object to be made having contacting surfaces coincident with the equator thereof so that an axial compressive action shortens the blank whilst the liquid expands the wall radially without any appreciable change in wall thickness into contact with the internal faces of the matrices when the latter are in contact. A blank 50, of e.g. aluminium or alloys thereof or plastic, having an opening 43 and a lower cylindrical portion is filled with liquid, e.g. oil or water, and located in a lower matrix 102, an upper matrix 104 fixed to a cylinder 107 of an hydraulic press 106 and having a bore 114, seal 115 and a non-return spring valve 118 is lowered to engage and axially compress the blank and the liquid therein to effect expansion of the blank until the matrices are completely closed together. A headed shaft 110 of the press 106 continues to move downwardly within the cylinder 107 to compress the liquid therein until a pressure release valve 121 is operated by which time complete expansion of the blank against the inner faces of the matrices will have been effected. Retraction of the cylinder 107 and shaft 110 causes replacement liquid to be drawn into the cylinder through a supply inlet 119 therein. The blank may be initially formed from a cylindrical tube 41 having a diameter 20% smaller than that of the finally produced sphere 30 and a portion 42, the diameter of which is substantially equal to that of the sphere. A sphere 10 having an opening 11 may be similarly formed. The blank may have a variable wall thickness.
