Apparatus for treating e.g. washing, starching, blueing, dyeing or bleaching textile material comprises perforated drums 7 into which the material is placed, articulated shafts 9 for rotating the drums about their own axes and at port-circular trough 1 of treatment liquid into which the drums may be immersed, the drums being so arranged that their axes pass through the vertical axis of the trough 1. In the form shown in which soiled clothing is washed, the shafts 9 which lie in articulated casings 10 are driven from a motor 17 through a gearbox 18, a gear 19, a shaft 12 and gears 20, 22, 21, 23. The casings 10 are fixed at their inner ends to a rotatable hollow shaft 11 driveable from a motor 13, each casing having a roller 25 lying in a track 26 so that the assembly of shafts 9, casings 10 and drums 7 may rotate. The treatment bath 1 which is divided by partitions 2 into a moistening section 3, a preparatory washing section 4,a main washing section 5 and a rinsing section 6 extends through 330 degrees thus leaving a loading and unloading station between the ends of the bath. The shaft 11 is intermittently driven (e.g. at 5 minute intervals to index the drums through one station (i.e. drum A to position of drum B), the track 26 being raised at appropriate positions to lift the drums over the partitions 2 or over the ends of the trough. As each drum moves to the loading and unloading position a lever 28 on the casing 10 is operated by a projection 29 to disengage a clutch 27 in the shaft 9 and so suspend drive to the drum 7. A secondary drive to a pair of rollers 38, 39 supporting a disc 30 mounted on the shaft 9 is then automatically switched in to rotate the drum 7 to a position wherein a pair of doors 48 in the drum lie over one of a number of spin dryers 36 mounted on a turntable 35; mechanism is then automatically operated by abutments to unlock and open the doors 48 and allow the clothing to fall into the spin dryer. The secondary drive is again switched in to bring the open doors beneath a chute 33 so that the drum may be reloaded. At the next indexing of the drums the reloaded drum 7 moves into section 3, its doors 48 being automatically closed as it does so. A casing 64 having observation windows 64 and a hood 65 for removing vapours are provided.
