Abstract
In a process of coating a wire or tape with a superconducting material consisting of at least two elements, e.g. Nb3, Sn, the heated wire is passed continuously through mixed vapours of the chlorides of Nb and Sn and hydrogen, the temperature of the wire being such that the Nb3Sn is deposited on the wire. The wire may be W, Ta, Mo, Ni/Cr, W/Ta, Nb/Ta or Rh/Pd and as shown in the drawing the wire 11 is continuously fed into a reaction chamber 10, the wire being electrically heated to 800-1400 DEG C. via graphite plugs 16 and 18. Chlorine gas is passed over heated Nb3Sn in a double walled tube 19 via inlet 22 and enters reaction chamber 10 via outlet 27. Hydrogen with or without HCl is also introduced into chamber 10 via inlet 20 of tube 19 and outlet 27 and helium or argon are also introduced into chamber 10 via inlets 15 and 17. The whole assembly is heated by furnace 26 so that the temperature of the mixed chloride vapours in chamber 10 is maintained at 700-750 DEG C. Alternatively the mixed chloride vapours may be formed by reacting the chlorine gas with elemental Sn and Nb placed in the tube 19. <PICT:0989381/C1/1>ALSO:In a process of coating a wire or tape with a superconducting material consisting of at least two elements, e.g. Nb3Sn, the heated wire is passed continuously through mixed vapours of the chlorides of Nb and Sn and hydrogen, the temperature of the wire being such that the Nb3Sn is deposited on the wire.
