A roof or roofing unit comprises two pairs of plane congruent triangular regions 10 arranged in contiguous relation to constitute a quadrilateral in plan view with the triangular regions of each pair opposite one another, the sum of the angles enclosed by the flow meeting vertices of the triangular regions exceeding 360 degrees. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the four triangular regions 10 are connected together to form a unit which is square in plan, and is applicable per se to the roof of a small structure such. as a bus shelter, when it is supported only at its two lowermost corners with a tie not shown between the supports, or is applicable as one of a plurality of similar units connected together in a larger structure. The separate regions of the unit may be formed by frames covered by sheet material 24 Fig. 8 the separate frames being joined together by jointing strips 26 having inclined faces against which edging strips 22 of the frames are secured. The units may be of unitary form made in asbestos-cement or glass fibre reinforced plastic or synthetic resin, and in one such construction, one of the lowermost corners 18 of a unit 10 is formed with a recess containing a depending lip 32 Fig. 9 which is engageable within the upper end of a vertical tubular support 40 which carries a flange 42 adapted to locate within a recess 36 in and edge strip 30 of the unit 10 where it is secured by bolts passed through aligned holes 38, 44. In the roof construction shown in Fig. 10, the units 50 are of diamond shape in plan, and the roof is supported only at the lowermost corner 54 of the units. In roofs constructed in accordance with the invention, valleys between adjacent units constitute drains for rainwater which is lead away by making the supports 40 at the lowermost corners of hollow form to constitute drainpipes.
