972,908. Zone-melting. BALZERSPATENTUND LIZENZ-ANSTALT. July 16, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 28059/63. Heading BIS. A rod is zone-melted by means of an electron beam on a surface which is artificially cooled. Passage of the molten zone may be effected by moving the rod or deflecting the beam. A plurality of molten zones may simultaneously be moved through the rod by rapid switching of the beam. As shown, a deflectable beam 15 melts a zone 16 of a rod 16a in a copper trough 4 having a fluid-cooled cavity 6.
