[Also in Division B6] A method of supporting an article in spaced relation to a support surface which comprises forming a curtain of moving fluid directed from the surface to enclose a space between the surface and the article and to form and maintain within the space at least one cushion of pressurized fluid which tends to oppose a reduction in the spaced relation between the surface and the article. As shown, a strip 1 of material is guided in a serpentine path by fixed supports 2, each having a curved perforated surface facing the strip. Pressurized fluid, forced through the perforations, is trapped between the supports 2 and the strip such that the strip floats while being pulled by draw rollers 3. Alternatively, members 4 and 6, Fig. 2 (not shown), may replace the supports 2, Fig. 1, when the strip is being fed towards these members. The supports 2 may have orifices 7, Fig. 3, leading from a cavity 9 to supply the fluid curtain which maintains a fluid cushion within the spaces enclosed by the supports 2, strip 1 and fluid curtain. Further orifices 10, Fig. 4, augment the supply of fluid forming the cushion at a different, e.g. lower pressure. In other embodiments, Figs. 5a-5c (not shown), the orificesare formed by slits 11 and 12 which may be continuous or discontinuous. The orifices may be inclined towards the centre as shown in Fig. 6. As applied to a support table for sheets, the supporting jets may be turned on automatically by photo-electric means as the sheet passes over successive sections of the table.
