Abstract

A silicon nitride ceramic is formed by mixing 0.1-25 weight per cent of a fluxing agent in powder form with powdered silicon nitride and pressure sintering the mixture. Fluxing agents mentioned are metallic magnesium, beryllium and aluminium; oxides of magnesium, beryllium, calcium, lithium, aluminium and ferric iron; nitrides of magnesium, beryllium, calcium, lithium and aluminium; and silicides of magnesium and calcium. The silicon nitride may have been produced by any of the following methods: (1) nitriding silicon powder at 1300-1650 DEG C.; (2) reaction of silicon chloride with either ammonia or N2/H2 mixtures at 1300-1650 DEG C.; or (3) reaction of silicon chloride with ammonia at -70 to +1300 DEG C. followed by pyrolysis.ALSO:A silicon nitride ceramic is formed by mixing 0.1 - 25 weight per cent of a fluxing agent in powder form with powdered silicon nitride and pressure sintering the mixture at 1500-1910 DEG C. Fluxing agents mentioned are metallic magnesium, beryllium, calcium, lithium, aluminium, and ferric iron; nitrides of magnesium, beryllium, calcium, lithium and aluminium; and silicides of magnesium and calcium.
