Abstract

970,399. Carburetters. ACF INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 12, 1961 [Jan. 30, 1961; March 20, 1961; April 10, 1961], No. 32640/61. Heading F1B. A carburetter comprises a fuel reservoir 36, a cover 38 over the top of the fuel reservoir, a tubular mixture conduit 12 supported by the cover and a bolt 42 extending from the fuel reservoir through the cover and through the tubular conduit normal to the axis thereof, the bolt fixing the cover and the mixture conduit together and including a fuel passage 56 axially therethrough the fuel passage including a first port 58 opening into the fuel reservoir and a second port 60 opening into the mixture conduit. The choke valve is closed by rotating the control lever 128 to its farthest position to the right as viewed in Fig. 2. This may be done by means of the manual lever 138 or the Bowden cable 142. The control lever 128 in this position also holds the throttle valve in wide open position by its connection to the throttle lever 84 through the arm 134 and spring 136. Upon starting of the engine the control lever is then moved clockwise to a first intermediate position. High speed operation of the engine will cause the engine governor through wire 150 and throttle lever 84 to move throttle 76 to a more closed position. Movement of the control lever 128 from its choke or start position to the first intermediate position releases the end 146 of the spring 143 so that under the action of the spring 143 the choke lever 74 is rotated clockwise as viewed in Fig. 9 to a full open position in which it is retained during the other control positions of the lever 128. Movement of the control lever 128 to the second intermediate position closes the throttle valve 76. Movement of the control lever 128 to the farthest left position holds the throttle 76 in its closed position and in some modifications one of the arms of the control lever 128 may contact an electrically live terminal of the ignition system to ground the ignition system and stop the engine. The idling system consists of a tube 106 extending into the fuel bowl at one end. An idle port 112 (Fig. 3) is formed through the wall of the conduit 10 to provide passage of idle fuel from the recess 110 through an aperture 115 in the gasket 49 into the mixture conduit 10. Port 113 (Fig. 6) through conduit 10 and an aligned aperture in the gasket 49 into recess 110 provides air flow into the recess 110 to mix with the idle fuel. The needle 64 has a portion 66 threaded into the upper end of the bolt 42 to provide axial movement of the needle 64 in the restriction 62. Adjustment of the needle 64 can be made by use of a screwdriver slot 68. The carburetter structure is made of sheet metal fabricated parts. The invention is applicable to carburetters for small engines adapted for use with lawnmowers or outboard marine engines.
