Abstract

979,829. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. SIEBE GORMAN & CO. Ltd. Dec. 23, 1963 [April 24, 1963], No. 16098/63. Heading B5K. [Also in Division D1] A seam joining two pieces 10, 11 of proofed fabric together comprises at least one row of stitches 12 or rivets uniting the pieces 10, 11 together; a layer 15 of impervious material covering the row of stitches 12 on one face of the pieces 10, 11, and a length 16 of elastomeric material on the other face of the pieces 10, 11 to seal and protect the stitched joint, the elastomic material having been vulcanized or cured when located over the seam to fuse and extend through the needle holes of the stitches. As shown, the pieces 10, 11 are coated with rubber 10a, 11a on their outer faces and folded over marginal parts 13, 14 thereof are stitched together at 12. The parts 13, 14 are folded back against the pieces 10, 11, respectively, after application of a bonding agent to the parts 13, 14 and/or the pieces 10, 11. An impervious tape 15 made of or coated with natural and/or synthetic rubber is positioned over the parts 13, 14 and sealed thereto by heat and pressure. A strip 16 of unvulcanized natural and/or synthetic elastomer is positioned over the seam and heat and pressure is applied thereto to complete the seam. The expression " proofed fabric " is intended to cover a woven or knitted fabric of natural and/or synthetic fibres impregnated or coated with a natural and/or synthetic elastomer or elastomers. The method may be used to seam two separate sheets together to form a larger sheet, two ends of single sheet together, e.g. to form a tube, or two superimposed sheets together.
