Abstract

978,075. Seaming non-metallic sheet material ; making plastic bags. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 39928/63. Headings B5D and B5K. A machine for uniting superposed layers of thermoplastics web material, e.g. for making bags, employs elongated ribbon-like heating elements having a central longitudinal rib-like deformation (Figs. 6, 7 and 8, not shown) in order to seal the webs along given lines and to weaken the united webs immediately adjacent thereto in preparation for tear-off usage. A web W of thermoplastics material supplied from a roll 12 is folded into two superposed layers by means of a plough 15a and in this form passes around a rotating drum 22 on which are supported a plurality of metal heating ribbons which extend across the surface of the drum. Electrostatic and air draught means 51, 52 are employed to drape the folded web over the series of heating elements in a substantially tensionless state and a resilient belt 49 or like means is employed to press the web material against the heating elements to ensure satisfactory seaming. The heating elements are supported on support bars 41 which are of a generally inverted channel shape, and are insulated therefrom by a polytetrafluoroethylene tape. Means are provided to pass electric current through the heating tapes at predetermined intervals. In order to provide for adjustment of the spacing of the heating elements, e.g. to produce varying sizes of bags, the heating elements and the support bars 41 are mounted on a pair of roller chains at either side of the drum 22 (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
