Abstract
In a process for treating molten metal involving blowing a stream of gas downwardly on to the surface of the molten metal or of a slag layer floating on the molten metal from a nozzle above the surface, the flow of gas to the nozzle is caused to pulsate regularly, preferably by operating a valve located in the gas supply line to the nozzle using a cam to interrupt the gas flow at regular intervals, e.g. 12-600 pulsations per minute, whereby the gas stream striking the surface varies regularly in velocity. Alternatively, the gas may be supplied by a low-speed reciprocating pump. The process may be applied to dephosphorizing molten iron using a slag, powdered lime being supplied dispersed in a stream of oxygen, or refining iron and steel by blowing an inert gas containing powdered desulphurizing or carburizing agent in suspension. Powder suspended in the gas stream may be introduced before the pulsations are introduced, but preferably a steady gas flow containing powder in suspension is maintained through one tube of a multi-tubular lance, pulsations being introduced into the flow of powder-free gas through another tube. Nonferrous metals may also be treated.
