Abstract

A method of lowering the mercapton content of a hydrocarbon or mineral oil containing mercaptans comprises contacting the oil in the presence of oxygen with a catalyst composition comprising a copper salt, a chloride, water and a calcined clay or clay-like material. Clay or clay-like material is defined as an oxide or silicate of Al, Mg, Ca or Fe or any mixture or compound thereof which when immersed in water or other liquids undergoes physical breakdown but which after heating at 250 DEG C. or more for up to 10 hours becomes resistant to such physical breakdown in liquids. Examples given include sepiolite, attapalgite, fuller's earth, bentonite and bauxite. Comparative examples of mercaptan removal from oils are given.
