Abstract
975,526. Electric hotplates. RADIATION Ltd., and C. D. MIDDLETON. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 35540/61. Heading H5H. A solid-type electric hotplate 1 having a temperature-sensing device 2 mounted in an aperture through the body of the hotplate has sealing means in the annular gap around the sensing device which is upwardly biased by a spring 7 so as to project above the working surface of the hotplate 1 when there is no vessel on the hotplate, the sealing means being constructed to prevent the flow of spillage through the aperture when the sensing device is in its upwardly spring-biased position. As shown, the temperature-sensing device 2 is a liquid-filled capsule connected by a capillary tube 3 to a temperature regulator (not shown). The sealing means comprises a cup 4, formed integrally with or attached to the capsule, having a flange 5 and a skirt 12, flange 5 being pressed against flanged insert 6 when in the upwardly spring-biased position. Small clearance gaps 10 and 11 obstruct the flow of spillage when the sensing device 2 is depressed by a cooking vessel, and lip 9 in container 8 traps liquid which may penetrate through gaps 10 and 11. According to the Provisional Specification the capsule may be integral with, or supported on, a flat disc.
