Abstract

The invention comprises 2-formylamino -5- (5-nitro -2- furyl)-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole, and the preparation thereof by (a) heating 2-amino -5- (5-nitro -2- furyl)-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole with formic acid or (b) treating 2-formylamino -5- (2-furyl)-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole with a nitrating mixture. The product has bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties. 2-Formylamino -5- (2-furyl)-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole is prepared by refluxing a solution of 2-amino -5- (2-furyl)-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole in 98% formic acid.
