974,658. Transverse-flow blowers. B. ECK. Jan. 18, 1961 [Jan. 18, 1960], No. 2050/61. Heading F1C. In a transverse-flow blower, the flow is influenced by an eddy current whereby the flow is directed into the interior of the impeller, the eddy current being produced with the aid of a guide member arranged between the inlet and outlet for the fluid and near and outside the impeller circumference, the gap between the impeller circumference and the wall of the guide member nearest the impeller decreasing in width in the direction of rotation of the impeller, and a flow-influencing member adjustable between two positions is provided on the outlet side of the guide member. Fig. 5 shows a blower in which an eddy current 8 is set up in the flow adjacent a wall of a guide member 1, the gap between the wall and the circumference of the impeller 4 decreasing in width in the direction B of rotation. A flap 6 can be pivoted from the position shown into a position in which it lies against the wall of the guide member 1, for the purpose of controlling the flow by changing the position of the core of the eddy current. A member 2 is either fixed or arranged to pivot. In a modification, the member 2 is omitted, and the flap 6 is in this case pivotable from the position shown to a position in which it is transverse to the gap between the guide member 1 and the impeller 4. In another modification, the flap 6 is omitted and the control is effected entirely by pivoting the member 2. Fig. 9 shows a blower in which the control is effected by movement of a slide 10 between the full-line and broken-line positions. The slide 10 is hollow and fits over a part of the guide member 1. The slide 10 may be replaced by a laminar slide sliding along a wall of the guide member 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 757,543 and 876,611.
