Abstract
963,860. Shaft couplings. ALLPATENT A.G. June 6, 1962 [June 8, 1961], No. 21865/62. Heading F2U. A torsionally resilient shaft coupling comprises a coil spring having internal and external surfaces defined by surfaces of revolution, one of the surfaces being supported by a co-operating surface of revolution on a supplementary centering member. A single coil tight wound spring 17 of rectangular section is rigidly secured to the ends of shafts 13, 15 and is supported on a cylindrical core 12 supported on spigots 13a, 15a formed on the shafts. Torsional movement of the shafts in one direction are transferred to axial movement of the spring, such axial movement being frictionally damped by the cylindrical core. The supporting member may be internal and/or external to the spring and may comprise oppositely-wound springs. The section of the spring and the support may be diminished at one end to provide variable rate damping. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 877,683.
