Abstract
A process for the hydrogenative treatment of hydrocarbon oils comprises contacting the oil at elevated temperature and pressure with excess hydrogen and a catalyst comprising nickel sulphide on a refractory support, the catalyst having been activated by sequentially converting the nickel component first to NiO, then to reduced Ni, then back to NiO and finally to nickel sulphide. The refractory support is usually Al2O3 and the catalyst may additionally contain Mo. Examples describe the catalytic treatment of hydrocarbons ranging from light naphthas to heavy gas oils at temperatures from 600 DEG to 800 DEG F., pressures of 800 to 1100 p.s.i.g., and 0.3 to 7 L.H.S.V. Specification 962,778 is referred to.ALSO:A catalyst comprising nickel sulphide on a refractory oxide support is activated by sequentially converting the nickel present to nickel oxide, then to nickel, then back to nickel oxide and finally to nickel sulphide. Additionally the catalyst may contain Mo and Al2O3 is the preferred refractory oxide. However, other specified catalyst constituents are metals of Group VIII, VIa and Ib of the Periodic Table and silica, magnesia and naturally occurring clays. Examples are given. Specification 962,778 is referred to.
