Abstract

962,611. Gear-machining. MICHIGAN TOOL CO. Oct. 19, 1962 [Dec. 18, 1961], No. 39685/62. Headings B3K and B3L. [Also in Division F2] A machine tool, such as a gear-shaping or finishing machine, comprises a slide 15 operatively connected to one of two nut and screw members 47, 65, means 57 for adjustably holding one member in a predetermined angular position, means for holding the other member against rotation during adjustment of the first, and means 69 for successively rotating the other member. The slide may be the knee 15 of a gear-shaving machine carrying the cutter 16. A nut 19, secured to a tubular member 21 sliding in a sleeve 22, co-operates with a screw 18 which may be rotated by a hand wheel 23 to adjust the slide vertically. The member 21 rests on a wedge 33 supported on a wedge 31 which moves in roller bearings. Movement of the wedge 31 by a fluid-pressure device 45 thus raises or lowers the saddle 15, the upper movement being limited by a stop 49 adjusted by the screw 47. Initially, the screw 47 is rotated within the nut 65 by a knob 63 rotating a worm engaging the wheel 57, the nut being held by a spring 90 and shoulders on the nut 65 and a bushing 67. The initial setting is indicated by a dial 98. Fine feed is imposed by a fluid-operated pawl moving the ratchet wheel 69 to rotate the nut 65. A knob 81 can be rotated to set a stop to determine the feed movement for each stroke of the ratchet. The ratchet is returned by the spring 90 when the work is lowered. The tool is fed upwards after each of several passes, the finishing passes being made without feed.
