Abstract
A mixture of pyrolytic graphite and a meta1 (e.g. B, W, Ta, Nb, Mo, Si, Ti, Hf, or Zb) is prepared by contacting a volatile metallic compound with a gaseous hydrocarbon (e.g. CH4, C2H6, C3H8 or C6H6) at a temperature of 1700-2300 DEG C. at a pressure of less than 20 mm. of mercury. The gas mixture preferably contains 100-300 mols. of the hydrocarbon per mol. of the metallic compound (e.g. BCl3) and the boron concentration in the examples is preferably between 0.32 and 1.74%.ALSO:A process for coating a substrate with a mixture of graphite and one of B, W, Ta, Nb, Mo, Si, Ti, Hf or Zr comprises supplying a volatile metallic compound, e.g. BCl3, with a gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. CH4, C2H6, C3H8 or C6H6, at a temperature of 1750-2300 DEG C. at a pressure of less than 20 mm. of mercury. The gas mixture preferably contains 100-300 moles of the hydrocarbon per mole of metallic compound and the boron concentration in the examples is preferably between 0.32% and 1.74%.
