The invention comprises tris (silyl) benzenes of the formula where R is an alkoxy radical, n is 0 or 1, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are monovalent hydrocarbon, alkoxy or hydroxy radicals and R<SP>1</SP> may additionally be hydrogen, at least one R <SP>1</SP> or R <SP>11</SP> being alkoxy, vinyl or OH or R<SP>1</SP> being H, and also comprises the polysiloxanes having repeating units corresponding thereto. The silanes are prepared by reacting RnC 6 H 3-n X 3 , where X is Cl or Br, with magnesium and a silane R <SP>1</SP>R <SP>11</SP> 2 SiX, preferably in the presence of a solvent. The hydrocarbon groups may be alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl groups. The silanes containing Si-H groups can be converted to the corresponding alkoxy derivatives by reaction with alcohol in the presence of sodium. Alkaline hydrolysis of the alkoxy compounds yields the silanols which can be condensed to cross-linked siloxanes by heating with alkalis or amine salts of carboxylic acids. Direct conversion of the Si-H compounds to the silanols can also be effected by hydrolysis with strong alkali in aqueous alcohol followed by neutralization. Silanes containing vinyl groups may be polymerized by reacting with compounds containing Si-H groups, e.g. methylhydrogen siloxanes. The polysiloxanes may also contain other conventional copolymeric units as well as units of the formula Si(M) 2 Z(M) 2 SiO, where M is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and Z is a p-phenylene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenylene ether, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-p-xylylene or 4,41- dimethylenediphenyl ether radical. The examples describe the preparation of many compounds including: (1) 1,3,5-tris (dimethylhydrogensilyl) benzene and the corresponding dimethylethoxy and dimethyl hydroxy-silyl derivatives, and the polymer of unit formula: (3) 1,3,5-tris(diphenylvinylsilyl) benzene; (4) 2,4,6- tris - (dimethylhydrogensilyl) and (dimethylhydroxysilyl) anisole; (6) compounds in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are Et, C 18 H 37 , C 6 H 11 , C 6 H 9 , C 6 H 5 CH 2 , OEt and CH 2 =CHCH 2 ; and 1,2,3- and 1,2,4-tris(dimethylhydrogensilyl) and (dimethylhydroxysilyl) benzenes, and their polymers and copolymers.
