Abstract
In a process for the preparation of acrylic acid by reacting at an elevated temperature in the vapour phase, acrolein or a compound which gives rise to acrolein under the reaction conditions, and oxygen in the presence of an oxidation catalyst, the gaseous reaction mixture leaving the reactor at below 100 DEG C. is quenched by contact with cooled liquid acrylic acid to reduce the undesirable polymerization of the acrylic acid manomer. The contact with the acrylic acid which may be pure or in an aqueons solution may be by counter-or co-current flow through a packed zone wherein the reaction gases are condensed and absorbed in the quenching liquid. The quenching liquid may contain polymerization inhibitors e.g. hydroquinone or methylene blue. Acrylic acid may be finally recovered by esterification, salt formation or solvent extraction followed by fractional distillation.
