Abstract
Molten cast iron is passed through a vacuum and then oxygenated. The metal may fall into a ladle contained in a vacuum chamber to remove occluded gases and then be oxygenated by adding oxygen as gas or by the addition of a substance, e.g. iron oxide, which will liberate oxygen. It is stated that the process retains the strength of the cast iron and reduces the brittleness.
