Abstract
Shaped articles of a hardened magnesiumbase alloy are manufactured by extrusion or similar forming operation after the heat treatment, e.g. at 372-482 DEG C. for 12-48 hours, of a finely particulated mixture, preferably compacted into a billet, of at least one magnesiumbase alloy, e.g. in form of granules 0.1-1 mm. in diameter, and one or more metals and/or alloys, e.g. in form of particles less than 44 microns in diameter, capable of precipitating within the solid alloy at least one alloying component contained therein, such as Zr, Mn, Th, a rare earth metal, Li, Ca or mixtures thereof; the precipitating metal or alloy may be Al, Sn, Si, Zn, Zr, or mixtures and/or alloys thereof. More than one powdered magnesium-base alloy may be employed when the precipitating metal is a component of at least one of these alloys. The extrusion billet may be prepared under pressure, e.g. 7030 Kg/cm.2, in a die-extrusion press container preheated, e.g. to 260-427 DEG C. Alternatively, each particle of the particulated magnesium-base alloy may be coated with a thin film of the precipitating metal or alloy by dipping into or spraying with the molten metal or alloy, or by gas plating, vacuum metallizing or peen plating. A magnesium base alloy, consisting of 0.8 Zr, one or more of Zn 0-4%, Ag 0-6%, Ca 0-1%, Li 0-5%, Th 0-4%, and a rare earth metal 0-4%, with balance magnesium, is specified. Other magnesium-base alloys specified: (a) containing 0.6% Zr, 2% Bi; (b) containing 0.6% Zr, 2% Nd and Pr. Specifications 690,783, 690,784, 690,785, 690,787, 690,853 and 690,854 are referred to.
