Abstract
956,023. Electric detonators. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 24, 1962 [Oct. 24, 1961], No. 38053/61. Heading F3A. A detonator comprises a highly compressed column 10 of secondary initiating explosive housed in a thickwalled tube 2 and spaced from a less compressed charge 6 of the secondary initiating explosive as in Specification 902, 643. and is provided with sealing means which allows ignition of the column 10 and after ignition closes the tube 2 to prevent escape of the gases generated. The sealing means may be a valve member 9, which is embedded in a fast-burning composition 8 extending into a constriction 3 adjacent an electric fuzehead 11 held in the outer casing 1 of the detonator by a neoprene plug 12. Pentaerythritol tetranitrate is used for the charges 10 and 6, as well as for a loose charge 7 filling the space between them. The bridge wire of the fuzehead is coated with a composition comprising lead mononitro resorcinol and cerium, which is ignited on passage of a current of 1 amp. for <SP>1</SP>/ 50 sec. On ignition of the composition 8, the valve member 9 is freed and forced back by the gases against the constriction 3. The valve member may be spherical or frusto-conical. In Fig. 4, member 9 is replaced by a delay composition 19, which on burning forms a plug of slag to seal the constriction. A delay composition 15, Fig. 3, may be placed between the fuzehead 11 and the tube 2. The fuzehead may be high or low tension or replaced by safety fuze. Aluminium powder may be incorporated in charges 10 and 6.
