Abstract

949,676. Screw and nut gearing. GEORGE RICHARDS & CO. Ltd. May 2, 1961 [May 3, 1960], No. 15620/60. Heading F2Q. In a mechanism, particularly for automatically controlled machine tools, wherein a long half-nut secured, for example, to the machine bed is engaged by a rotatable screw 3 mounted, for example, in the machine carriage, gas or liquid lubricant is supplied under pressure to a plurality of outlets 11 in opposite side faces of the screw thread, the gas or liquid pressure being high enough to prevent metal-to-metal contact, thus reducing static friction and preventing backlash. The gas or liquid lubricant also provides viscous damping. As shown, the screw 3 has a passage 10 supplying oil to a central gallery 9 from which it passes through individual passages (only one shown) and restrictors 14 to individual arcuate grooves 11 in the thread faces. Oil drain passages 2 are provided in the nut. Since the screw is engaged by the nut over only half of its circumference most of the oil emerges ineffectively through the uncovered grooves 11. The different pressure exerted by the oil on the two faces of the screw thread are determined by the clear' ance and the axial load. In a modification the oil is replaced by gas, e.g. air, emerging through restricting orifices in the screw thread, the restrictors 14 and arcuate grooves 11 being omitted.
