Abstract

The firelighter composition described in Specification 589,594 and 949,635 are improved by subjecting them to a surface treatment with an alkali after their formation in solid form. Thus the firelighter composition may be (1) dusted or sprayed with solid alkali, e.g. soda ash, lime, sodium or ammonium carbonate, (2) sprayed or coated with or immersed in a liquid alkali, e.g. aqueous caustic soda, ammonia, ammonium or sodium carbonate or mono- or tri-ethanolamine, or (3) exposed to gaseous ammonia. Firelighter blocks wrapped is gaspermeable packages may be treated with gaseous ammonia. Examples are given.ALSO:Firelighter compositions consisting essentially of a solid condensation polymer, e.g. urea-formaldehyde, containing a water-immiscible liquid fuel dispered therein, such as those described in Specifications 589,594 and 939,635, are improved by subjecting them to a surface treatment with an alkali after their formation in solid form. Thus the firelighters may be (1) dusted or sprayed with solid alkali, e.g. soda ash, lime, sodium or ammonium carbonate, (2) sprayed or coated with or immersed in liquid alkali, e.g. aqueous caustic soda, ammonia, sodium or ammonium carbonate or mono- or tri-ethanolamine, or (3) exposed to gaseous ammonia. Firelighter blocks wrapped in gas-permeable packages, such as cellulose film, paper and thin cardboard, can be thus treated with gaseous ammonia. Other wrapping materials mentioned are waxed paper and films of polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethylmethacrylate and polyethylene terephthalate. Examples are given.
