Abstract

<PICT:0949610/C3/1> A process for refining ferrous metals comprises pouring a stream of metal through a ring formed by nozzles directed inwardly and downwardly, supplying an oxidizing gas under pressure to the nozzles whereby the stream of metal is broken up into droplets which react with the oxidizing gas, and collecting the reacted droplets. As shown, an annular casing 41 is provided with nozzles 45 from which streams of oxidizing gas are ejected and which break up a stream of metal passing through the centre of the casing. The gas may be supplied to a chamber 42 in the casing and pipes 44 leading to the nozzles may pass through a water-jacket 46. The metal may flow from a ladle to a tundish, then through the nozzle ring to a further ladle.
