Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0949405/C2/1> wherein M is sodium or potassium, AO is either a bidentate ion formed from lactic or gluconic acid or is a tetradentate ion formed from tartaric or citric acids, y is 1 for bidentate ions and 2 for tetradentate ions, x is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5; v is not greater than 3y-x (when z is 1) or is 0 or an integer not greater than 5y-x (when z is greater than 1) and z is not greater than (x+3y)/2y, and polymeric forms thereof, and the preparation of such compounds by either dissolving aluminium hydroxide or isopropoxide in the a -hydroxy acid in aqueous solution and adding thereto alkali metal hydroxide or reacting an alkali metal aluminate with the a -hydroxy acid in aqueous solution. The compounds produced depend on the stoichiometric proportions of the reactants used. Two or more a -hydroxy acids may be used to give products consisting of mixtures of the compounds of the invention. An orally administrable antacid composition, which is essentially non-astringent, comprises a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent. Examples are given of aqueous solutions containing 41% and 50% of mixtures of lactic acid and gluconic acid chelates.
