Abstract
In the granulation of a mixture comprising monocalcium phosphate, 15-70% of urea and free acid, the acidity of the mixture expressed as P2O5 is reduced to 1% before drying to prevent caking. The acidity may be reduced by the addition of gaseous or aqueous ammonia, aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide, or solid hydrated lime, calcium carbonate, or diammonium phosphate. Aqueous ammonia may be added during or after granulation, or partly before and partly after granulation. The monocalcium phosphate may be in the form of ordinary or triple superphosphate. The mixture may also contain potassium chloride or ammonium or potassium sulphate. Sulphuric and/or phosphoric acid may be added before or during granulation. All or part of the added acid may be neutralized. Granulation may be effected with water or steam in a rotary drum or paddle mixer. Drying may be effected in a rotary dryer in a stream of hot air at 80-105 DEG C.
