946,501. Vehicle steering gear. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Oct. 29, 1962 [Nov. 2, 1961], No. 39284/61. Heading F2Q. In a motor vehicle steering gear of the kind wherein a rack 1 is urged against a pinion 3 by a spring 6 acting through a metal or plastics plunger 5, outward movement of the plunger is damped hydraulically by a liquid being forced from an inner chamber 11 to an outer chamber, formed by a domed cover 9, through a restricted passage 15 in a fixed orifice plate 8, unimpeded return flow being through a non- return valve 12. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the pinion is above the rack, and the damper unit lies below the latter, with the outer chamber connected to a reservoir above the pinion. The damper unit may be positioned opposite the pinion, or intermediate the pinion centre line and a rack end bearing, or two dampers may be used, one opposite the pinion and one remote from it.
