Abstract
Beta-amino-acroleins of the formula: <FORM:0945536/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 may independently represent hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group are prepared by reacting formamide or an N-alkyl or N-aryl derivative thereof of the formula: <FORM:0945536/C2/2> with phosgene, a phosphorus halide or a phosphorus oxyhalide to form a first intermediate reaction product, reacting the latter with an acetal of the formula: <FORM:0945536/C2/3> (where R4 and R5 independently represent alkyl or aryl groups) or with a vinyl alkyl or vinyl aryl ether of the formula: CH2:CR1-OR4 to form a second intermediate reaction product, which is then hydrolyzed, e.g. with alkali metal carbonate solution.
