Abstract

945,461. Bucket chain excavators. CLEVELAND TRENCHER CO. Oct. 19, 1962 [Nov. 6, 1961], No. 39739/62. Heading E1F. In an excavator of the type having a digger unit 20 of endless, bucket-carrying chains 22 circulating about means 26, 26a, 28 supporting the chains on a boom 18 one of said support means 26a is adjustable by fluid-actuated means so as to automatically maintain a predetermined tension in the chains. The fluid actuated means comprise a ram or rams 48 mounted on the boom and acting on a slider block or blocks 38 slidably mounted in a guide slot or slots in the boom and carrying in bearings the shaft of one set of idler sprockets associated with the chains. On the digger unit encountering abnormal resistance during digging operations the build up in pressure in the hydraulic circuit of the ram or rams causes opening of a pressure relief valve in the circuit so that the ram or rams can collapse and the chains slackened until the cause of the abnormal resistance can be dealt with.
