Abstract
933,615. Friction clutches. SINTERED PRODUCTS Ltd., and E. R. DAWTREY. March 5, 1962 [March 3, 1961], No. 7887/61. Class 80 (2). In a friction clutch comprising one or more arcuate shoes 24, with or without friction linings, mounted on a driving or driven member 17 and expanded centrifugally with or without spring assistance or opposition into frictional engagement with a driven or driving drum 12 which may be integral with a belt pulley, the shoes 24 are formed from sintered powdered metal, e.g. cast iron, steel or bronze. The shoe support member 17 may also be of sintered metal, e.g. aluminium alloy; and the drum 12 may be also of sintered metal, e.g. iron, or it may be cast in steel or iron. These parts may be of sintered steel or soft iron. As shown, cylindrical pivots 27 on each shoe 24 are axially assembled into recesses 18 in the shoe carrying member 17 fast on a driving spindle 15. In Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the shoes are retracted by surrounding garter springs. In Figs. 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 (not shown), the shoes are each formed with a pivot at both ends so that the shoes may rock in either direction, according to the sense of torque, about fulcra formed by flared ends on the shoe carrying member, and a single garter spring serves to retract the shoes. In Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), the clutching surfaces are V-shaped. In Figs. 11, 13 and 14 (not shown), the shoes are articulated to the support member by links. In Fig. 12 (not shown), the shoes are contracted by helical springs between the tail of one shoe and the nose of the adjacent shoe.
