932,779. Mattresses; bedsteads. P. FRANKENSTEIN & SONS (MANCHESTER) Ltd. May 23, 1962 [May 23, 1961], No. 18489/61. Classes 52 (2) and 52 (4). A mattress comprises an impermeable, elongated container partly filled with liquid, e.g. water, having a rigid or rigidly confined base and walls and a flexible top 15 which has excess developed length and width with respect to the planform of the mattress. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) the container comprises a rigid bath 10 having peripheral flanges 11 supported by a bedstead 13 and to which a flexible cover 15 is detachably secured. A fan 24 may supply air via an outlet 25 to the interior of the container to raise the loaded top 15 or via flexible tubes 22 to orifices 23 in the cover 15 for ventilating the mattress user. The fan 24 may be reversed to draw off urine via the tubes 22. Water 20 in the container is circulated via the distributer 28 and the outlet 31 by a pump 33; heating means 29 and cooling means 34 for the water being provided. Alternatively, the pump 33 may supply water to a movable nozzle 36 to provide a jet directed to the cover 15 to massage the user. In another embodiment (Fig. 5), the non-rigid container 38 is confined in a rigid receptacle 40.
