Abstract
In a method of contacting a gas with a solid or liquid material in the form of discrete particles, the gas is passed at high velocity in streamline flow through a convergent passage and the material to be contacted with the gas is introduced into the passage in a direction transverse to the flow of the gas and at a velocity insufficient to destroy the streamline flow of the gas whereby the particles of the material are entrained by the gas. Liquid materials may be sprayed into or injected into the gas stream in sheet form which is broken up by the gas stream. The temperature of the gas may be elevated temperature with respect to the solid or liquid material and the method employed to heat a solid or liquid material and cool the gas, to spray dry a liquid containing solid material or to dry a wet solid material such as coal. The spray-drying of skim milk, molasses and blood, and of solutions or slurries of sodium bichromate, sodium carbonate, and polyvinyl chloride, is referred to.
