Abstract
A cast iron, steel or light metal packing member for a piston (Group XXVI) is coated at the areas subjected to wear with a layer of either molybdenum or molybdenum alloy having such a high content of chemically-uncombined molybdenum as to obtain substantially the high wear characteristic of pure molybdenum. The layer may be applied, after treating the surface of the article by sand blasting, grinding or chemical etching, by thermal decomposition of volatile molybdenum compounds, e.g. molybdenum hexacarbonyl, sputtering, electrolytic decomposition or by flame spraying from two pistols directed at the same point on the base. The pressure gas used in the spraying process is preferably ammonia to reduce the oxide content of the applied layer, and the base may be heated prior to or during the process. The molybdenum layer may be coated with a layer of tin, copper or other soft metal.
