Abstract

937,676. Coating by vapour deposition. NATIONAL-STANDARD CO. Dec. 16, 1960, No. 43445/60. Class 82. Elongated metallic material, e.g. wire, strip or sheet, is coated with metal by being passed through a chamber at atmospheric pressure which contains vapours of the metal to be deposited. From 5% to 100% of the atmosphere in the chamber consists of metal vapour, any remainder being composed of neutral or non-oxidising gases such as He, Ne, Kr, A, N 2 or cracked NH 3 . As shown, wire 10 is electrolytically cleaned in bath 20, rinsed in water bath 20a, passed through HCl in bath 20b, rinsed in cold water bath 24, rinsed in hot water bath 29, passed through opening 34 into coating chamber 33 and, after its exit through orifice 35, quenched in bath 37. The atmosphere in chamber 33 is derived from containers 50, 51, 52, metal being melted in container 50, the resulting molten metal being heated to a higher temperature in container 51, and the molten metal from this latter container being vaporised in container 52, the. vapour passing into chamber 33 through pipe 55. Unused condensed vapour returns to container 52 through pipe 57. Neutral or non-oxidising gas may be introduced into container 52 through pipe 58. Suitable coating metals are Al, Sb, As, Bi, Cd, Ca, Cr, Cu, Au, Fe, Pb, Li, Mg, Hg, Ni, K, Rb, Ag, Na, Sr, Tl, Sn and Zn. The examples relate to the coating of steel wire.
