Abstract
Gases containing acetylene are obtained by contacting hydrocarbons with a bath of molten material at 1100 DEG -1800 DEG C. and cooling the gases obtained. The hydrocarbon is preferably a gas, e.g. natural gas or may be a liquid or vapour, and is preferably preheated. It is contacted with the molten liquid by passing it through holes in the bottom of the bath or blowing it downwardly through a pipe above the bath at an angle to the horizontal so that the hydrocarbon penetrates the liquid. Suitable materials for the bath are metals, alloys and slags, e.g. molten copper, bronze or cast iron and is preferably electrically heated by inductance, resistance or arc. The gases are cooled by direct or indirect contact with a cooling fluid, e.g. water.
