Abstract

An all-tobacco cigarette or a mouthpiece cigarette has the paper web that provides the fibrous sleeve, fluted, by a method in which the web is passed between rollers, the surfaces of which comprise a plurality of co-operating flutes and ribs such as to stretch the web laterally and impress corresponding longitudinally extending flutes and ribs in the paper. The pattern of the rollers is such that some compression of the paper takes place at least at the flanks of the flutes so as to offset any additional air permeability that results from the stretching. The flutes may be impressed so as to extend continuously along the cigarette paper web without interruption or they may be interrupted so that there are flute-free areas. Further the flutes may be impressed parallel to the edge of the paper or at an angle thereto so as to appear spirally on a finished cigarette.
